Alexandria High School
The Lapel Lady Bulldogs were able to win the sectional championship Friday evening, by defeating the Alexandria Lady Tigers by a score of 3-2. Lapel was able to revenge a 3-2 loss to Alexandria in the county championship match from earlier in the season. This is the second girls tennis sectional crown won by a Lapel girls tennis team and the first since 2011.
Lapel took a quick 2-0 lead as Senior Peighton Dobbins made quick work of her opponent, winning 6-1,6-0. At 3 singles, Lauren Benagh wasn’t far behind with a 6-2,6-0 win. Lapel battled at both doubles positions but Alexandria took the next two points as Gabby Cherry and Brie Baxter fell 7-5,7-5 and Emma Bush and Tonya Riffey fell 6-2,7-5.
With the match tied at 2 all, it all came down to 1 singles. Maddie Shannon took the first set vs. Blaine Kelly 6-3, but Kelly battled back to win the second set 6-2. A back and forth third set saw Shannon fight and come back to win a huge game, that put her up 5-4 and she was able to finish the match with a 6-4 third set win.
“What a wonderful group of girls we have and I’m extremely proud for the way they battled and I’m just so happy for the girls”said Coach Coomer after the match.
Lapel (19-3) moves on to the Marion Regional on Tuesday to face the Marion Lady Giants, with a 5PM start time.
