The Lapel Bulldog tennis team was able to secure it’s fourth straight sectional title, with a 4-1 win over the Alexandria Tigers. Lapel started the day, at Highland Middle School, against APA. After taking a 3-0 lead on the Jets, rain set in. The match was moved to the Howard County Tennis Center, a indoor facility in Greentown. The Bulldogs defeated the Jets quickly, by a 5-0 score.
Alexandria defeated Frankton 5-0, earlier in the afternoon in Greentown. That set up the finals for 6PM against Alexandria. 1 and 2 singles players Joseph Conrad and Jesse McCiurdy set the tone for the match, by racing out to big leads and not looking back. Conrad won 6-1-6-0 and McCurdy won 6-0,6-0.
At 3 singles, Austin Lyons came out of the blocks a bit slow, falling behind 0-4 in the first set. Austin was able to regroup and use his super athleticism and competitiveness to storm back to take the first set 7-5, and cruise 6-2 in the second set. His win clinched the sectional title!
The 1 doubles team of Zach Krebs and Reid Ratzlaff played one of its best matches of the season. They dropped the first set 6-3. In the second set, they were able to battle ahead for a 5-2 lead but was unable to finish and lost a heart breaker in the second set, falling 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
At 2 doubles, the duo of Noah Wolfgang and Ross Hagen came out on fire, winning the first set 6-1. After a slight lull in the second set, the Lapel duo was able to close the match, with a 6-4 second set win, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 victory!
The boys will travel to Marion tomorrow night, to face the Winchester Golden Falcons, who defeated Jay County, to win the Jay County sectional. Start time is 5PM.
